Mushtaq Thobani, CPA, CA
Partner, Calgary

Mushtaq Thobani

Mushtaq Thobani is an analytic and detail-oriented thinker. Having worked within the accounting industry for more than 40 years, a field his father encouraged him to pursue, Mushtaq learned early on that the most successful companies adopt a diligent, thoughtful approach to their financial reporting and leverage the expertise of teams, like that of MMT, to offer a variety of accounting and business solutions.

Educated in the United Kingdom, Mushtaq completed his Chartered Accountant designation in London, England, then worked abroad for a multinational firm in Kenya. He was later transferred to the Calgary division as a Managing Partner. Soon after, Mushtaq expanded the practice, which today is the firm – MMT Chartered Professional Accountants.

“MMT Chartered Professional Accountants offers a full range of services from assisting clients with tax audits, review engagements, tax planning and filing, as well as financial reporting and disclosure services. We are always looking for new opportunities to help our clients. As an example, we recently began assisting companies applying for Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax credits. A program that encourages innovation and economic growth for Canadian companies. I believe opportunities to offer services like the SR&ED program make our firm unique. This, and our commitment to provide personal, unique solutions for every client.”

Outside of the office, Mushtaq is an avid golfer and traveller. His favourite course in Calgary remains Heritage Pointe; however, he has had the pleasure to play the Old course in Scotland, as well as Pebble Beach and several exciting courses in Hawaii, Argentina, Spain and other unique destinations.

Riz Visram, CPA, CMA
Partner, Calgary

Riz Visram

Riz Visram is a native Calgarian and has been with the firm for over 14 years. During his career as a CMA, Riz has seen the Calgary business community change in response to both the economy and regulatory developments that affect how companies approach their accounting and financial initiatives.

“I began my career at MMT as a student working on my designation in 2000. Because MMT works with both small and medium size companies, the work experience I received was rich and diverse. The firm has always made education a top priority – staying on top of new regulations and opportunities to help our clients save money and reduce their taxes. In terms of personal growth, I found there were a number of disciplines I could focus on and really took to assurance services, personal tax and corporate tax, both planning and compliance. It’s a tremendous feeling to offer solutions the client never considered. To find accurate, reliable ways to help reduce your taxes.”

Away from the office, Riz is a busy father of three and also enjoys the spring and summer months playing golf. “As a family, we believe that our best childhood memories came from family vacations and weekend trips. We’ve travelled with our children to Hawaii as well as California. Whenever we can, we love to explore Banff and the beauty that both Alberta and B.C. offer. Aside from time with my family, I recently took up golf. I find each course I play challenging and enjoyable and look forward to the upcoming season!”
